Executive Privilege: George Washington invoked it, Dwight Eisenhower named it and Richard Nixon abused it. Now it looms as the nuclear option in George W. Bush's battle with Congress over its investigation into the firing of eight U.S. attorneys. So what the heck does it mean, and how much weight will it carry in the current standoff?

Nick Robins' new history paints a hard-nosed picture, devoid of even a scintilla of nostalgia for the Raj. It is the story of a robber-baron organization that set the model for today's rapacious multinationals.

The courts are the last line of defense that "we the people" have to protect ourselves from abuses by the legislative and executive branches. If judges collude with either of the other two branches of government then the separation of powers, and thus, all hopes for individual liberty, will collapse.
